COVID-19

September 21, 2020

Parents and Staff,

Buena Vista ISD has been notified that a staff member who works for Buena Vista ISD has tested positive for COVID-19. Buena Vista ISD has been deeply sanitized and all District employees and students are instructed to continue to follow CDC guidelines and recommendations and to practice social distancing.

Based on the information that we have gathered, it has been determined the end of the 14-day incubation period for anyone possibly exposed on campus to the staff member that is Sunday, October 4, 2020 .  Out of an abundance of caution, we advise you to monitor your child’s health & your health, follow the CDC guidelines for people who have had close contact and contact your primary care physician if you develop symptoms.  Should staff or students develop symptoms, the appropriate District administrator should be immediately notified

Individuals who have been in a school and are lab-confirmed to have COVID-19, the school must notify its local health department, in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.  Schools must adhere to the confidentiality requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and cannot disclose information protected by federal law under FERPA.

Concerning potential exposure and notification of students and staff of potential exposure. Our local health authorities have explained to the district that Epidemic (Epi) Investigators question individuals who are lab-confirmed positive. The Epi Investigators then contact those who could have been exposed. The Epi Investigators work with the confirmed COVID-19 person to notify the people they may have been in close contact. They also work together, determining the places the COVID-19 person may have been in close contact, potentially exposing others. Lastly, the health authorities and the Epi Investigators encourage the confirmed COVID-19 individual to inform anyone they believe they could have been in close contact, potentially exposing others..

In collaboration with local health authorities and consideration of relevant state and federal health guidelines, the District will continue with school and school-related activities until further notice. The District will continue to conduct thorough sanitation of all areas used by students and staff within each school building and all District employees and students are instructed to continue to follow CDC guidelines and recommendations and to practice social distancing. We hope for a successful recovery for our staff member.

Sincerely,

Mark Dominguez, Superintendent
